Dental pain has terrible timing. In my years treating emergencies, I’ve noticed it almost never strikes at 10am on a Tuesday — it waits for Friday night, the middle of a holiday, or 2am when every clinic looks closed and the pain is climbing.
If that’s you right now, take a breath. Most dental emergencies settle quickly once you’re in the right hands, and there are things you can do this minute to take the edge off.
This page is built to help, not just sell you an appointment. I’ll show you how to tell whether it’s a true emergency, what to do for the most common ones, how to handle wisdom tooth pain, and how to ease the ache until you reach us.
If you need an emergency dentist in Sharjah tonight, we’re here — but first, let’s get you comfortable.
What counts as a dental emergency? Severe or worsening tooth pain, swelling of the face or gums, bleeding that won’t stop, a knocked-out or broken tooth, or a lost filling or crown that’s causing pain.
Anything with swelling or a fever needs prompt attention — those signal infection.
Is This a Dental Emergency? A 30-Second Self-Check
Not every dental problem is a middle-of-the-night crisis, and knowing the difference saves you a lot of panic.
Here’s the quick triage I run through:
Urgency | What it looks like | What to do |
🔴 See a dentist now | Knocked-out adult tooth, facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop, severe unrelenting pain | Call us immediately — time matters |
🟠 Same day | Broken tooth with pain, lost crown, throbbing toothache, wisdom tooth flare-up | Book a same-day appointment |
🟢 Within a day or two | Minor chip, mild sensitivity, lost filling with no pain | Call to book; keep the area clean |
One rule overrides the whole table: if you have facial swelling, a fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing, treat it as urgent. A spreading dental infection is the one thing you should never sleep on.

What to Do Right Now — First Aid Before You Reach Us
While you arrange to see us, here’s how to handle the most common emergencies. These buy you time — and in one case, can save the tooth completely.
Knocked-out tooth (you have about an hour)
This is the one true race against the clock. Pick the tooth up by the crown — the white part — never the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saliva, without scrubbing.
If you can, slot it straight back into the socket and bite softly on a clean cloth. If you can’t, drop it into a cup of milk (not water — water damages the delicate root cells) and get to us fast.
A tooth put back within the hour has a real chance of surviving.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any pieces you can find. Rinse your mouth with warm water, and if there’s swelling, hold a cold compress to your cheek. A sharp edge can be covered with a piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax until you’re seen.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently either side of the sore tooth — you’d be surprised how often trapped food is the real culprit. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps.
Take an over-the-counter painkiller as directed on the packet. What you must not do is hold an aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue and makes things worse.
Swelling or a dental abscess (don’t wait on this one)
Swelling around a tooth or in the face usually means infection, and infection spreads. Rinse with warm salt water and keep your head raised.
Do not apply heat, and do not hope it settles overnight. This is the emergency I most often see people ignore until it becomes serious — please don’t.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side, keep the area clean, and you can buy temporary dental cement from a pharmacy to cover it until your appointment. It’s uncomfortable rather than urgent — unless there’s real pain.
⚠️ Please don’t: put aspirin directly on the gum, apply heat to a swollen face, or “wait and see” when there’s facial swelling or fever. These are the mistakes that turn a manageable problem into a serious one.
Wisdom Tooth Pain: Why It Hits So Suddenly — and What Helps
Wisdom teeth are behind more late-night emergency calls than almost anything else — our endodontist, Dr. Siddharth Dubey, sees it constantly — and there’s a reason the pain seems to appear from nowhere.
What’s really causing the pain
Your wisdom teeth are the last to arrive, usually in your late teens or twenties, and there’s often not enough room for them.
When one gets stuck part-way (impacted), or a flap of gum forms over a partly-erupted tooth, food and bacteria get trapped underneath and the gum becomes inflamed and infected — a condition called pericoronitis.
That’s the throbbing, swollen, can’t-quite-close-your-jaw pain most people describe.
Relief you can try tonight
Rinse thoroughly with warm salt water several times a day to flush the area — this really does help clear the trapped debris.
A cold compress on the jaw eases swelling, and an over-the-counter painkiller (ibuprofen tends to work well here, if it’s suitable for you) takes the edge off. Keep the area as clean as you can.
When wisdom tooth pain becomes an emergency
See a dentist urgently if you develop facial swelling, a fever, or you can’t open your mouth properly or swallow comfortably.
Those are signs the infection is spreading and needs professional treatment — often a thorough clean, sometimes antibiotics, and a plan for the tooth itself.
Removal or manage it?
Not every sore wisdom tooth needs to come out. Settling the infection and keeping the area clean is sometimes enough; when it keeps flaring up or the tooth is badly positioned, removal is usually the long-term answer.
We’ll decide together, once we’ve seen what’s going on.

Safe Ways to Ease Dental Pain Until Your Appointment
By the time you’ve done the first aid above, you know the basics — warm salt-water rinses, a cold compress (15 minutes on, 15 off), and over-the-counter painkillers taken as directed.
One extra tip helps most people: at night, prop yourself up with an extra pillow. Lying flat sends more blood to your head and makes throbbing worse.
Easing dental pain while fasting
If you’re fasting, plan your pain relief around suhoor and iftar so you’re covered through the day, and use salt-water rinses (which you spit out, not swallow) in between.
And remember: seeking treatment for a real dental emergency comes first, a spreading infection shouldn’t be left until sunset.
Emergency Dentist or Hospital? Where to Go
Most dental problems — toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a contained abscess, wisdom tooth pain — are best handled by a dentist, with far less waiting than a hospital.
Go straight to hospital A&E instead if swelling is affecting your breathing, swallowing or vision, if bleeding won’t stop after firm pressure, or if a facial injury might involve a broken jaw.
When in doubt with severe swelling or a high fever, get seen fast rather than waiting.

Emergency Dental Treatment When You Need It Most
Frequently Asked Questions
As soon as you can — same day if the pain is severe, constant, or comes with swelling or fever. Severe pain usually means the nerve or a developing infection is involved, and both get worse, not better, with time.
Often yes, if you act fast. Handle it by the crown, keep it in milk (or back in the socket if you can), and get to a dentist within about an hour. The sooner it's put back, the better its chances.
It can be. Mild discomfort as it comes through is normal, but facial swelling, fever, or being unable to open your mouth means the infection is spreading and you need urgent care. Don't wait those out.
Over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, taken as directed, plus warm salt-water rinses and a cold compress. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum — it damages the tissue. These are temporary measures; they don't fix the cause.
